Follicular phase
From day 1 until ovulation; the part of the cycle that varies most in length.
What happens in the follicular phase?
Technically this phase starts on day 1 and overlaps with your period, which is why the first two phases share days. FSH prompts several follicles to grow, and usually one becomes the lead follicle. It makes oestrogen, which rebuilds the womb lining and makes cervical mucus wetter and stretchier. The follicular phase varies the most in length. In the large app study, it averaged 16.9 days but ranged from about 10 to 30.
