## Quick answer

- Comfort food and nutrition can go together.
- Pair plant iron with vitamin C for a gentle boost.
- Easy and cheap food counts, and so does eating on hard days.

Some days you want a salad. Period days are often not those days. Here are comforting snacks that feel like a hug and bring a little extra along for the ride. None of them are rules.

## Warm and cosy

- Porridge with banana and a spoon of nut butter
- Beans on toast (beans bring [iron](https://splash.care/learn/nutrition/iron) and [fibre](https://splash.care/learn/glossary/fibre))
- Lentil or veg soup with bread
- Hot chocolate made with milk or a plant drink with added calcium

## Grab and go

- Yoghurt with berries
- Hummus with pepper sticks and pitta (vitamin C plus plant iron)
- A handful of nuts with a few squares of chocolate
- Popcorn
- Dried apricots and an orange

Low on energy, in pain or short of money? Tinned beans, frozen veg, instant porridge and toast all count. If cooking feels like too much, or certain textures are hard on bad days, eat what you can manage. Eating something is the goal.

> **Splash says:** stock a "period drawer" or freezer shelf when you feel good, so future-you has easy food ready on day one.

**Myth:** You should avoid treats on your period.

**Fact:** Enjoying treats is part of a normal relationship with food. The Eatwell Guide is about the mix over days and weeks, not any single snack.

> If heavy periods leave you wiped out, iron-rich snacks are a nice boost, but they are not a fix for anaemia. See a GP if you are always exhausted.
