## Quick answer

- Typical use is about 76% effective; perfect use 91–99%.
- Needs daily tracking of three signs and expert teaching.
- Cycle-tracking apps (including this one) aren’t contraception.
- There are no guaranteed “safe days”.

Fertility awareness (also called natural family planning) means [tracking](https://splash.care/learn/cycle-basics/tracking-101) your body’s signs to work out when you’re fertile, then avoiding sex or using condoms on those days. It’s [hormone](https://splash.care/learn/cycle-basics/hormones-explained)-free, which appeals to lots of people. But it needs honesty about how well it works.

**76%** Typical-use effectiveness – around 24 in 100 people get pregnant in a year (NHS)

With [perfect use](https://splash.care/learn/glossary/perfect-use) and expert teaching, the NHS estimates 91–99%. The gap is big because perfect use is hard: daily readings, interpreting them correctly, and no unprotected sex on any possibly fertile day.

## What it involves

- Tracking three signs daily: [Basal body temperature](https://splash.care/learn/glossary/bbt), [Cervical mucus](https://splash.care/learn/glossary/cervical-mucus) and [cycle length](https://splash.care/learn/glossary/cycle-length)
- Learning from a trained teacher – ideally for 2–3 cycles, using other [contraception](https://splash.care/learn/contraception/methods-overview) meanwhile
- Avoiding sex or using condoms throughout the [fertile window](https://splash.care/learn/glossary/fertile-window)

## Who it’s harder for

- [Irregular cycles](https://splash.care/learn/cycle-basics/irregular-cycles)
- Recently stopped hormonal contraception or recently had a baby
- Shift work, poor [sleep](https://splash.care/learn/movement-sleep/sleep-cycle) or frequent illness (throws BBT off)
- Anyone for whom pregnancy would be a big problem right now

> Important: Splash’s fertile-window predictions are for awareness and conception planning – they are NOT contraception. The NHS does not officially recommend any app for preventing pregnancy. There are no guaranteed “safe days”. Only a certified/regulated contraceptive app, used exactly as directed, makes that claim.

**Myth:** Sex on your period is always safe.

**Fact:** Sperm can survive for days, and with shorter cycles ovulation can come soon after a period. No day is guaranteed safe.

**Myth:** Withdrawal (pulling out) is a fertility awareness method.

**Fact:** It isn’t – and it’s unreliable, as pre-ejaculate can contain sperm.

> **Splash says:** tracking is a superpower for understanding your body. If you’re not trying for a baby, pair it with a reliable method – the knowledge is still yours!

### When to see a doctor

If you want to use fertility awareness as contraception, ask a sexual health clinic about trained teaching. If you’ve had unprotected sex in a possibly fertile time, emergency contraception is available.
